The Sunday Paper Recommends—Week of January 14, 2024
At The Sunday Paper, we're always discovering books, podcasts, films, and other works that move the needle and spark inspiring change. We hope these suggestions—plus this this one item we've been turning to lately—open your heart and mind and encourage you to come together for meaningful conversations.
What We’re Watching
The Color Purple is a story that’s been lauded for decades, in many forms. Alice Walker, the author of the 1982 novel, became the first Black woman to win a Pulitzer for fiction. The silver screen adaptation followed, earning its stars, which included Oprah Winfrey and Whoopie Goldberg, multitudinous nominations and awards. The latest iteration, a musical film version directed by Blitz Bazawule, is dazzling and it does its previous renditions justice. This is a film to see that spans the depths of hope and healing.
What We’re Reading
On the eve of Martin Luther King Day, we’re recommending We Dream a World, the beautiful picture book tribute to Dr. King and Coretta Scott King written by their granddaughter, Yolanda. A 13-year-old activist who never had the chance to meet her grandparents, Yolanda carries forth her family’s legacy and determination with her fresh prose. She tackles the gravest issues today, from gun violence to racism. “You had a dream we would be judged by what’s in our hearts, not by the color of our skin,” writes the young activist. This is a book to read to and with daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, friends, and more.
What We’re Listening to
Lorraine Candy and Trish Halpin each spent more than 20 years writing of-the-moment content for some of the the world's top women's magazines. They know women's issues, from health to career to family. Now the media sages bring their interviewing skills and wisdom to the masses with their podcast 'Postcards from Midlife.' The episodes are intelligent and accessible and take deep dives into menopause, aging parents, reinvention, marriage troubles, raising kids, and so much more.
