I was fast asleep when I heard the rain bouncing off the roof.

At first, I wasn’t sure if it was raining. The cracking and the creaking of the roof were what got my attention. But slowly, as I lay there, it became clear there were multiple noises at work.

I’d gone to bed unsettled and woke up the same way. I’d had dinner with friends, all impacted by the fires. The entire conversation was about loss, grief, PTSD, relocation, dislocation, confusion, fear, uncertainty—and that wasn’t just about the fires. It was about life in general. It was about our country. It was about our politics, our neighbors. I found it to be a lot.
