This week, many parents rejoiced as they brought their little ones to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Yet there were plenty of parents who didn't post happy vaccine pictures on social media, hesitant to get their children vaccinated. Nadine Gartner understands…but she's also on a mission to make sure parents don't make decisions about vaccines (for COVID-19 and others!) based on misinformation. While pregnant with her first child, Nadine realized that many parents in her Portland, Oregon community were choosing not to vaccinate at all or to delay their children's vaccination schedules…and they were reaching these decisions by researching online (often going down anti-vaccine rabbit holes!) and conferring with other vaccine-hesitant parents rather than experts. She realized the only pro-vaccine messaging on the internet was coming from the federal and state governments (two entities many parents distrust!) and she wanted to change that. So, she created Boost Oregon, a non-profit organization that aims to disrupt the dangerous cycle of vaccine misinformation by providing evidence-based education…without fear or degradation. Through their free workshops for the public, seminars for medical professionals on how best to talk to parents about immunizations, and website, Boost Oregon is changing the tone of the conversation around vaccines to promote facts and eradicate fear. Want to learn more about (or even volunteer for) this organization striving to move humanity forward?
