Sunday Paper Recommends—Week of March 12, 2023
At The Sunday Paper, we want to inspire you to gather at your table—virtually or with friends and family—and open your heart and mind to conversations that will move the needle. After all, the dinner table is where we connect on topics and map out the changes we can all make that’ll truly make an impact.
This week, to encourage your conversations, we recommend checking out the following:
What We're Reading
Do you feel blessed everyday? New York Times bestselling authors Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie’s book The Lives We Actually Have: 100 Blessings for Imperfect Days will keep you blessed even on a messy or an ordinary day. Want a sneak peek at the book? Check out our previous reflection “For learning to love yourself” here.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, The Sunday Paper wants you to meet the woman behind International Women’s Day, Jewish activist, journalist, and educator Theresa Malkiel. In The Diary of a Shirtwaist Striker, Malkiel captured the largest strike led by female workers in 1909. Her book and activism advanced the lives of working-class women and helped reform New York state labor laws.
What We're Watching
A week before the Oscars, Netflix released the new show Chirs Rock: Selective Outrage. What will happen to Jimmy Kimeel’s third time hosting the ceremony tonight at 5 pm PT? Share your favorite movies and predictions with us in the comments! Beloved movies like Everything Everwhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin are among the top nominees this year.
What We're Cooking
To my ambitious, everyday-you’re-hustling, not-just-chasing-but-living-dreams, know-your-complete-worth-and-won’t-settle-for-less, don’t-quit-till-you-get-it-ALL boos, I see you, queens! When you get it cracking at five a.m., spoil yourself with a lil’ “dessert” for breakfast that still packs a nourishing punch. Here you get all the banana pudding feels in a healthier package. Frozen bananas give that sensational creamy texture when blended with yogurt, then we go HAM on the toppings! Go o- with a little hemp seed, flaked coconut, and glorious fresh fruit. Add your favorite granola, too. I threw in a few Nilla wafers for authenticity’s sake. Go out and own it!
SERVES 2
4 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk Greek yogurt
1/2 cup oat, almond, or coconut milk (my preference is oat milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup your fave granola
6 vanilla-flavored wafer cookies, such as Nilla wafers
1 cup unsweetened flaked coconut
1 ripe banana, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
1 mango, peeled, pitted, and diced
Handful of fresh raspberries
1. Place the frozen bananas in a heavy-duty blender (I like to let them chill in there for 3 to 5 minutes, which softens them up a bit so they blend better). Add the yogurt, milk, vanilla, maple syrup, cinnamon, and ginger and blend until smooth, starting on low speed and gradually increasing to high, 1 to 2 minutes. Pause that blender and use a flexible spatula to scrape down the sides, then briefly blend again, starting on low speed and gradually increasing to high, to make sure everything gets incorporated.
2. Divide the smoothie between two shallow bowls. Top with the granola, cookies, coconut, banana, hemp seeds, mango, and raspberries and dig in.
CELEBRATE!
