Sunday Paper Recommends—Week of January 19, 2025
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, we encourage you to take some time to reflect on his powerful message and contributions, take some time to volunteer and give back, or donate to some worthy causes that could use your help.
Here are some ideas:
Volunteer
Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'” So, if you can, take the time to volunteer on MLK Day of Service. Americorps or The King Center are two organizations that are making it easy to find local opportunities in your community.
Donate
Give what you can to a local charity or send a donation to our list of organizations helping with the LA wildfires. With your help, we have raised over $34K though our fundraising efforts. Join in our community and donate to The American Red Cross, LAFD Foundation, Baby2Baby, and Habitat LA. If you have the capacity, donate your time—not just on MLK Day—to a local non-profit. Greatnonprofits.org is a good resource for finding deserving organizations in your region.
Learn
Get inspired. Learn about the incredible life and work of Dr. King. If you’re in Atlanta or the D.C. area, you can visit national monuments like the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and Preservation District and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. But, there are several other beautiful monuments across the country. You can also listen to Dr. King’s speeches, including the “I have a dream” speech and his lesser known speeches, available online. And, finally, go to your local library and check out some of Dr. King’s own books or one of the many definitive biographies written about his life.
