Sunday Paper PLUS Recommends—Week of November 17, 2024
At The Sunday Paper, we often discover books, podcasts, films, and other works that move the needle and spark inspiring change. This week, we are thrilled to hand the mic again to our Sunday Paper PLUS readers! Our thanks to Julie, Paula, and Penny for their recommendations. We hope what they suggest below opens your heart and mind.
What Julie Anna Glynn Is Reading
Father Gregory Boyle, a beloved Jesuit priest, has spent the last 30 years helping to transform lives for the better. He is the founder of Homeboy Industries, a global gang-intervention program that teaches those impacted by and involved in crime that there is love, humanity, and worthiness in all of us. As an author, Father Boyle brings compassion to the page. In his latest book, Cherished Belonging, he shows us that radical love and empathy can lead to profound shifts. He offers incredible stories and pieces of wisdom, all with inspiration and humor. This is a book to gift loved ones this season. Thank you for reading and recommending it, Julie!
What Paula Scott Dehetre Is Watching
At The Sunday Paper, we love a good show about an outsider. And an outsider who is also a single mother who solves crimes? We're in! Reader Paula is in, too, as she recommended Higher Potential this week, a new HULU comedy that checks all these boxes and more. Kaitlin Olson, from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Hacks, plays a mother working as a cleaner for the police department when she comes across some evidence that she rearranges, thus proving her potential for solving crimes. She lands a job as a consulting detective—and the rest is a witty, funny, escapist show with a profound female lead. Thanks for the rec, Paula!
What Penny Molina Is Listening To
Glennon Doyle has an unparalleled talent for making the seemingly insurmountable things in life all the more beautiful. Her podcast, "We Can Do Hard Things," recommended this week by Penny, sheds light on the all that's hard—loss, childcare, grief, illness, loneliness, career challenges, divorce, depression, change— and puts a human spin on it. Together with her wife, Abby Wambach, and Amanda Doyle, her sister, Glennon hosts kind, funny conversations about all the facets of life, leaving us listeners stronger and more hopeful by each episode's end. It's like being in the room with your dear friends, holding hands through life. Thanks for the suggestion, Penny!
