Sunday Paper PLUS Recommends—Week of July 21, 2024
At The Sunday Paper, we often discover books, podcasts, films, and other works that move the needle and spark inspiring change. This week, we are thrilled to hand the mic again to our Sunday Paper PLUS readers! Our thanks to Deb, Katie, and Mary for their recommendations. We hope what they suggest below opens your heart and mind.
What Deb Is Watching
Veteran TV producer and writer David E. Kelley has swooped in and given "Presumed Innocent," the new Apple+ series based on the bestselling novel and subsequent movie starring Harrison Ford, a fresh take—and it's riveting. Jake Gyllenhaal takes the role of attorney Rusty Sabich (whom Ford played in the film), a gutting lawyer accused of killing the woman he had an affair with. This series offers the thrills of a murder mystery and courtroom drama with the depths of a family drama. Thanks so much for the rec, Deb!
What Katie Is Reading
There is a reason why millions of readers clutch Elin Hilderbrand’s novels on the beach every summer: They sweep you to other worlds like the best fiction does. Her novels are beautiful escapes and deep dives into family, loss, and love. Her latest, Swan Song, is one of the best ever. This novel is the stunning end to Hilderbrand’s series based on Nantucket. Were so grateful to Katie for recommending this book! This is a wonderful story to lose yourself in this summer.
What Mary Is Listening to
Award-winning journalist Rachel Maddow is back with a second season of her podcast "Ultra," which tells a riveting and rather scary story of a demagogue in the United States. Maddow takes listeners deep into the worlds of violent extremism, politics, and divisiveness. Weaved throughout the narrative are tales of spies, a foreign influence operation inside Congress, and more. These are wild times right now and Maddow sheds light on events past that continue to have an impact today. Thank you for the recommendation, Mary!
