The holidays are connected with the narrative of joy and togetherness. But the truth is, this time of year can be a marker of grief…and one that proves to be hard for so many facing loss. Here at The Sunday Paper, we are thinking of all those whose lives have been horribly punctuated by having lost a loved one this past year. In this light, we are thinking of those in our own lives and in the public space who are going through this. We offer our love and light to people like Jean Smart, who lost her husband; Michael Che, who lost his grandmother; Robert Downey Jr., who lost his father; Ilhan Omar, who lost her father last year; and the countless others who had to say goodbye in 2021. The holidays can be tough to be without the people you love. While we know our words cannot obviate grief, we hope our sentiments spotlight the truth: We are thinking of you.
