I accompanied my friend David to an AA meeting not too long ago. It was an open meeting, which means guests can come to bear witness and support someone they love. David was celebrating 35 years of sobriety, so I wanted to be there to acknowledge his incredible achievement and to wish him a “happy sobriety birthday” (his other birthday is also this week).

As I’ve mentioned to you before, I’ve been to many AA and NA meetings over the years. I’ve also been to Al-Anon meetings and impromptu sobriety meetings for people who just wanted to gather to be open, honest, and share their life’s struggles and successes.
