1. The Planet Has Endured 12 Straight Months of Unprecedented Heat

This week, the United Nations chief said the world is on a “highway to climate hell” after a year of unprecedented heat: Every single month from June 2023 to May 2024 was the world’s hottest such month on record, according to the European Union’s climate monitoring service. The news came as the western U.S. is experiencing its first heat wave of the summer. For more on this story, click here.

2. The Failing State Next Door

This week, Mexico elected Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to head the Mexican state. The outcome generated much excitement. Yet in an important piece in The Atlantic, David Frum argues that her victory shouldn’t obscure another fact: Sheinbaum’s career-long subservience to predecessor Andréas Manual López Orbrador, who sought to subvert democracy. 3. The New Guide to Leaving a Tip

Ask anyone about the topic of tipping these days and odds are high you’ll get some pretty heated reactions. In fact, according to a new survey, roughly one in three adults in the U.S. call our current tipping culture “out of control” and a third of those polled reported being especially annoyed by pre-entered tip options on payment screens. So, who is it important to tip—and how much? This is a must-read guide.

4. How Much Advil Is Too Much?

If you pop ibuprofen (lovingly referred to as “Vitamin I” by many) for your aches and pains, you know how powerful it can be when it comes to treating your symptoms. But how much is safe to take, how can you tell if you’re overdoing it, and when is it important to be extra cautious? You’ll find the answers to these questions and more here.
