1. The Latest on the Assassination Attempt on Former President Trump
Former President Donald J. Trump was injured in a shooting on Saturday, an act that federal authorities are investigating as an assassination attempt. The shooting happened at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. It resulted in one rally attendee and the suspected gunman dead, and two spectators critically injured, according to a statement released by the Secret Service. Security officials escorted Mr. Trump off the stage as he was bleeding from the area by his ear. The former President, who confirmed to the public that he is fine, released a statement stating he had been “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear." President Biden condemned the violence in a statement. This is an active investigation and evolving story. You can read the latest updates here.
2. My Prayer for the Protectors
"Think of the agents who instantly surrounded Trump with their own bodies," wrote longtime journalist and Washington Post columnist Colbert I. King in his op-ed Saturday night. King, who has a way of writing arresting sentiments, distilled one of the harrowing truths of the shooting at former President Trump's rally in Pennsylvania: Those in the Secret Service risked their lives in an attempt to block a would-be assassin's bullet. They raced "to put their bodies between themselves and the gunfire coming the former president's way." King's column is a sobering reminder of how violence is never the answer, and how we must stop to recognize and honor the risks taken by the agents. You can read his op-ed here.
3. What’s the Future of the Already Tumultuous Race for the White House?
As the investigation of the assassination attempt on former President Trump is actively evolving, officials with Trump's campaign said he still plans to attend the Republican National Convention scheduled to start on Monday in Milwaukee. This truth leaves many questioning the safety, messaging, and tone of the event. The violence has overtaken the narrative, leaving the future of the already tumultuous race for The White House even more unknown. You can read more about the stakes and consequences here.
