The legendary Steven Spielberg is considered by many to be the most famous director in the world, and at 75 years old, we love that he is still working to become better and better at his craft. His filmmaking career spanning more than 50 years is responsible for iconic movies such as Jaws, Schindler’s List, and E.T.—but it wasn’t until his most recent project that he was ready to tell the story of his own life.

Spielberg’s new movie, The Fabelmans, resembles an inside look into his childhood, his family, and the origin of his love for making movies. It’s a deeply personal account that took him 60 years to share, which he credits to finally overcoming his own internal resistance.

Though he was also unsure if his mother would be comfortable with him sharing their family’s story with such a large audience, Spielberg says she gave him her approval before she passed away by telling him if he thought he could make something he would be proud of, he should go ahead and do it.

Spielberg also said discussing the film with his sisters after they watched for the first time was one of the best moments they’ve shared together. “We’ve always been close, but this story brought us back together again as if we were all back in Phoenix,” Spielberg told TIME.

You can read more about Spielberg’s new movie and his devotion to his craftsmanship in his TIME Magazine cover story here.

Question from the Editor: What is your “craft” and how has your love for it grown over time?
