Actress Glenn Close, 75, Bucks Beauty Standards and Shares Why We Get More and More Interesting As We Age
It’s a Sunday Paper adage to say that age is only a number. And youth? We believe it’s a total mindset. So when we recently read how Glenn Close feels the same, we wanted to throw a party. Close, a venerable film and TV actor, recently told Glamour that her mental state is one filled with youth.
“I’m 75, and I look out in the world and I feel like I’m looking out in the world with the energy of somebody in their 20s,” Close told Glamour. “And that’s who I am.”
We echo Close’s sentiment here. We also appreciate the refreshing take she has on how society obsesses over women’s changing façade. “We are so brainwashed about skin,” Close continued. “Certainly about women’s skin […] It’s actually fascinating to me, because as our house ages, we should get more and more interesting and interested. And yet you have this façade that people see.”
Instead of negatively fixating on how her looks are evolving, Close chooses to embrace the beauty in the shifts. For instance, when she looks at her body, she’ll acknowledge how it is different from when she was, say, 30—and that is a normal and wonderful fact. “And it’s like, Okay, I see; it’s happening,” Close told Glamour. “So I’m trying to come to the point that I just embrace my—what’s the word they use for it? Crepey skin? Is there a beauty in it? I try to think that maybe it looks like the sand after the tide has gone out.”
The way Close is radically embracing herself today, at 75, has us endlessly inspired.
